PYReco BRINGING INNOVATION

JUN 22 2010

FOLLOWING trials at a pilot facility, PYReco is bringing Europe's first large scale pyrolosis plant to the Tees Valley during 2010.

Pyrolysis breaks down matter in the total absence of oxygen and is one of the most environmentally effective ways to deal with a range of waste materials.

The Wilton development will have an initial throughput of 60,000 tonnes, representing a significant breakthrough in reprocessing a wide range of rubber materials, much of which are currently disposed of in environmentally inefficient ways.

With 60 million discarded tyre casings per annum, projected to rise by 4% a year, PYReco's process fits this requirement, achieving 100% reuse of the material, qualifying for one of the highest EU Waste Hierarchy rankings.

Once full production is achieved, the process will be capable of reaching circa four million barrels of recoverable diesel fuel, plus 4.5 million barrels of oil equivalent of syngas with an energy rating comparable to Propane per year.

The greatest environmental savings of all, however, will come from recycling the carbon black and steel and the knock-on savings of CO2 emissions, as conventional carbon black manufacture is achieved through burning oil.

The process presents a "closed-loop" cycle of reuse within the motor industry.

It also displaces the burning of a considerable tonnage of crude oil.

Initial estimates have suggested that the company may be able to show CO2 reductions exceeding 2% of the UK Government's total commitment under the Kyoto Treaty.
